In South Evia, between Karystos and Styra there something peculiar buildings, "Dragon House" as called by the inhabitants. Mysterious and impressive buildings, 25 in number, are dated according to others from the 12th BC century and according to others from the 6th century. They are made of huge stones, without foundation and windows.

Unknown remains until today, their capacity. Residential gods or humans? Shelters quarrymen or graves? Temples or shepherd huts? The fact that everything is built near quarries suggests that it is rather temples dedicated to the gods or patron god of quarrymen or the hero Hercules, the personification of power.

xisou unknown remains the identification of manufacturers of Drakospita. Was Dryopes, mythical inhabitants of Karystia, who skillfully constructed these megalithic structures? Or was Kares, mountain people of the East known for its architecture of Bodrum, which have many similarities with those from Euboea? The authorship of these monuments will be left alone forever hidden in the mist of the past.

The dispersion and diversity of Drakospita are continuity indications and perhaps competition to build megalithic buildings. Robust their volumes, using heavy squared monoliths and their virtuosic way links, they give the impression of a real architectural challenge. The uniqueness of Drakospita a convincing argument that generated by operators of a native culture with remarkable skills in working stone and deep architectural knowledge.

Construction Method

The roof of Drakospita, is made by a so-called "ekforic" system. For roofing with ekforic system needs good calculation and great craftsmanship. Above the wide wall Drakospito placed a large plate that protrudes slightly towards the interior of the room. Above the first plate is placed a second protruding inwardly further. On the second and a third one that protrudes from the bottom of most and this continues until the last plates meet those of the opposite wall.

It seems easy but it is not. If no well-calculated weights of the plates, the center of gravity of the construction will be found outside the support base (which in our case is the wall of the room) and the roof will collapse! To avoid the collapse of the manufacturers of Drakospita use and large boulders as counterweights above the plates in the section that is above the walls. The plates, counterweights and most boulders construction is very large. Some of these materials weighing many tons and the whole structure can comfortably be called cyclopean.
